Mayor de Blasio’s Affordable Housing Plan: What Will The Plan Do?

  • 200,000 Over 10 Years: Mayor de Blasio’s affordable housing plan will create 200,000 units of affordable housing through both preserving 120,000 existing affordable housing units and building 80,000 additional units.
  • $41 Billion Investment in Affordable Housing: The de Blasio housing plan calls for a $41 billion investment to create and preserve 200,000 units of affordable housing over 10 years.
  • Mandatory Affordable Housing Development: For the first time ever, developers will be required to construct affordable housing units any time new housing developments are built.
  • $2.5 Billion for Affordable Housing Construction: The Mayor’s plan will double the budget for affordable housing construction to over $2.5 billion per year.
  • Four Times the Affordable Housing for Low-Income Families: Under the de Blasio housing plan – the city will create more than four times as many affordable housing units (16,000) for low-income families than the previous 12 years.
  • 200,000 Quality Jobs: More than 200,000 quality jobs will be created by the Mayor’s affordable housing plan – 194,000 construction jobs and 7,100 permanent jobs.
  • $61 Million Per Year to Fund Tenant Legal Services by 2017: Funds will help provide free lawyers for tenants who are in housing court fighting illegal evictions.
  • Nearly 80% of Affordable Housing Units for Lowest Income Families: Under the de Blasio housing plan, 78% of the 200,000 housings units to be created and preserved are earmarked for extremely low, very low, and low income renters.
  • Seniors, Communities and Businesses Benefit: Zoning for Quality and Affordability (ZQA) will lead to more senior housing, better community facilities and commercial space for retail and jobs in our neighborhoods.
